P-1 Visa Issue with NFL Player Stuck in London

Every foreign player in the NFL is on a P-1 visa.  Usually, somebody is already there on a visitor visa and changes from that visitor visa to a work visa which is called the P- 1. The problem comes if you leave the USA, you can't just automatically come back on that P-1 visa without getting interviewed.

What Likely Happened To The NFL Case?

When the player went to London, the player didn’t think that he needed to get an interview to come back on the P Visa. If he came back without getting that applied to his passport he would not have any work authorization and it would be illegal for the giant to keep a salary when he is not on that P1 visa status.

What Is A P-1 Visa?

P visas are for athletes coming to the United States to compete in internationally recognized events. Technically, athletes on P-1 visas are not supposed to even train or coach on these visas. Thus, if an athlete needs to coach, do sponsorship activations, promote seminars, or other activities, then the P visa may not be appropriate. Also, if the athlete only trains in the United States but competes overseas, the P-1 visa may not be appropriate. There are exceptions but they need to be carefully argued by an immigration attorney to the USCIS for the best chance of success.
